Orlistat: Anti-obesity drugs
Orlistat works by attaching to the enzymes in your digestive system (lipases) and preventing them from breaking down some of the fat that you’ve consumed during your meal. The fat that is not digested cannot be absorbed and it is removed by your body.

A recent study from the University of California, Los Angeles, demonstrated that orlistat can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in patients with an eating disorder. This intervention prevents the body from absorbing the fat that has been stored in the intestines, making it more difficult to get enough calories from food. But the study did not show a significant difference in the type 2 diabetes risk with orlistat use.
The study, called the “Lose Up Study,” involved more than 30,000 patients with type 2 diabetes who had either a diagnosis of eating disorders or a history of type 2 diabetes. They were randomly assigned to take the low-dose or orlistat-containing meal three times a day with orlistat (120 mg/day).
The results showed that patients who took orlistat for three times a day were twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes as patients who took no medication. Those who took orlistat for three days had significantly fewer overweight (9.9 percent) and obesity (10.2 percent) risks than patients who took no medication for three days.
“The data from this study confirm that orlistat can be a valuable tool in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes in patients with an eating disorder,” said lead author Dr. Andrew W. Schoenberg, a researcher at the University of Southern California’s School of Medicine.
Researchers also showed that patients taking orlistat had a reduced risk of diabetes compared with those who did not take the medication. This was especially important because the type 2 diabetes risk can vary greatly from patient to patient.
“The study provides a unique opportunity to show that the use of orlistat for three times a day is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes in patients with eating disorders,” said Dr. Paul E. Dolin, of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Department of Psychiatry.
The study was funded by a U. S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant (P01-AG028079) to the University of California, Los Angeles, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Treatment for type 2 diabetesTreatment for type 2 diabetes is recommended for patients with an eating disorder and other risk factors for diabetes. These include:
• Obesity • Diabetes • High blood pressure • High cholesterol • Diabetes mellitus • Diabetes related to certain medications • Excess body fat • Obesity • Hormonal therapy • Diabetes complications
These drugs can help reduce the risk of developing diabetes and other health problems.
The use of orlistat, a lipase inhibitor, has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, the long-term effects of using orlistat on the body’s immune system have not been fully examined.
StudyThis study shows that orlistat can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes in patients with an eating disorder. The study also did not show a significant difference in the risk of type 2 diabetes with orlistat use. However, researchers found that patients who took orlistat had a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, but did not have a higher risk of developing diabetes compared with those who took no medication. Researchers also found no significant difference in the rate of obesity, overweight and diabetes complications between patients taking orlistat and those who did not.
“This is the first study that has provided insight into the mechanisms of action of orlistat in type 2 diabetes patients,” said Schoenberg, who led the study.
Orlistat is a prescription-only weight loss medication. In the U. S., the medication is taken daily, while in Europe, it is taken only once a day. Because of the longer-term effects of orlistat, it is not recommended for patients with an eating disorder or other risk factors for diabetes.
